Repair vs alteration: what is the difference?

Repair restores a damaged garment. Alteration changes size, shape or fit. Many real jobs combine both.

Repair restores function

A repair starts with damage. A zipper is broken, a seam has opened, fabric is worn or a lining has torn.

The aim is to return the garment to use while respecting the original construction as much as possible.

Alteration changes fit

Alteration starts with fit or style. Trousers are too long, a dress is too wide, a jacket needs shape or a sleeve length is wrong.

This work often needs a fitting because the result depends on the body, posture and fabric behavior.

Accepting enquiries for November

Planning a repair or tailoring project for November?

Send photos and a description of the work. We are accepting repair and tailoring enquiries for 2 November onwards. Please allow 3–5 days for a reply.

  1. 1 Photos or a short video: the whole item and a close-up of the problem area.
  2. 2 Item type, material (if known) and quantity.
  3. 3 What happened or what you want changed; the desired result and relevant measurements.
  4. 4 Your location; fitting or parcel delivery; preferred deadline and urgency.

The preliminary estimate is free. We confirm the final price after inspecting the item. We will agree the price and timing with you separately. Please arrange visits or sending garments with us in advance.

Many garments need both

A jacket may need a zipper repair and a sleeve adjustment. A suit may need trouser hems and a small seam repair. We quote the combined work as one plan.

Combining related work can save time because the garment is already being opened or measured.

How to choose the right service

If the garment is damaged, start with repair. If it does not fit, start with alteration. If you are unsure, send photos and explain the result you want.
